Schools for Democracy in Ukraine

Last week EWC received a Certificate of appreciation in recognition of the long-lasting partnership, dedication and support in implementing educational reforms in the “New Ukrainian School”. The Ministry of Education and Science, who is a partner in “Schools for Democracy” program, also honored other donors supporting educational reforms in the country.

Inspiring and far-reaching initiatives to improve democratic development in schools were presented at the National Conference for the “Schools for Democracy” programme in Ukraine on June 25-26. Almost 50 schools got to showcase the results of their efforts, and nearly 300 stakeholders participated at the event.

The first Thorvald Stoltenberg seminar: a great success

International Trainings and Workshops

In mid-June the first Thorvald Stoltenberg seminar brought together 28 young leaders from 26 countries at Utøya. For five days they discussed challenges and opportunities arising in diverse societies, learned new tools to combat hate speech and discrimination as well as how to facilitate intercultural dialogue. 

New EWC project "Integration of Refugee Children in Greek Schools"

The 3-year project will be carried out In cooperation with the Greek Ministry of Education, Science and Religious Affairs, the National Institute of Education Policy and other partners. It is financed as a pre-defined project under the EEA/Norway Grants.

New pilot project on civic competences in Ukraine

On 6-7 May, over 100 participants from 52 schools from all over Ukraine joined a two-day kick-off training in Kyiv.

Teaching controversial issues in the Nordic and Baltic countries

Participants from the "Teaching Controversial Issues in the Nordic and Baltic countries" project met in Vilnius to share experiences and best practices from the last 8 months of implementing own initiatives. 

Regional cooperation on teacher training in the Western Balkan

The EWC project “Preparing Future Teachers in the Western Balkan: Educating for Democracy and Human Rights” is launched with a steering group meeting in Oslo April 11-12. The six partner institutions from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo* met with external experts and EWC to discuss and finalize key aspects of the project.

600 youth leaders from 50 countries applied for the Thorvald Stoltenberg Seminar

International Trainings and Workshops

The first international Thorvald Stoltenberg seminar for youth leaders will take place at Utøya, Norway, in June 2019. By application deadline, EWC had received 600 applications from more than 50 countries!

Call for participants - "Romania: Building Democratic School Cultures"

The European Wergeland Centre invites Romanian teacher trainers to participate in a training course and study visit that aims to support the quality of teacher training in Romania through strengthening competences of teacher trainers, school inspectors and school counselors in citizenship and human rights education.  The call for applications is now closed.

EWC in Expert Panel on Citizenship Training in Arab Countries

EWC contributed to an international seminar in Beirut, Lebanon hosted by the Aydan Foundation, aiming for a more holistic approach to teacher training in citizenship education in Arab countries. The seminar brought together insights and reflections from experiences with citizenship education in Arab and other countries, based on real needs in teacher training and good practices that already exist.
